Flying Phoenix Facing the Sun

Flying Phoenix Facing the Sun

Flying Phoenix Hill lies north of Hualong Stream in the county town, its slopes spreading like a phoenix's wings greeting the sun. Below once stood a Confucian academy with a Kuixing Pavilion, library, lecture hall, and temple, fronted by a lotus pond. Legend says the phoenix and dragon met here, so the temple and pavilion were built to hold the site. It is now the Ningxiang County Guesthouse, offering a different kind of scenery.

Feifeng Mountain is north of Hualong Stream in the county seat. The mountain is like a phoenix with both wings spread, resembling a flying phoenix facing the sun. At the foot of Feifeng Mountain in those years was built a Confucian school, in front of which was Kuixing Pavilion, behind which was a library, and in the school were a lecture hall and a Confucian temple, with a lotus pond in front of the temple. Feifeng Mountain lies at the end of Hualong Stream. Legend says that when dragon and phoenix mate, the land could fly away, so a Confucian temple and Kuixing Tower were built to suppress it. Today it has become the Ningxiang County Party Committee Guesthouse, presenting another kind of scenery. The Qing dynasty man Chen Qing wrote a poem praising this scene: "The red sun rises from the blue sea, on cinnabar mountain rises the phoenix. Green mountains fill the pendants, paulownia and bamboo cover the high ridge."
