On the fourth day of the second lunar month in the 11th year of the Tongzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1872), Zeng Guofan died at the age of 62. His younger brother Zeng Guohuang and his sons Zeng Jize and Zeng Jihong escorted the coffin from Jinling (Nanjing) back to their native place in Hunan. They arrived in Changsha in the latter part of the fifth lunar month and held the funeral in the middle of the sixth lunar month, burying him south of Jinpen Ridge outside the south gate. Two years later, Zeng's wife, Lady Ouyang, died, and Zeng Jize then reburied his father, joining him with his mother at the south side of Fulong Mountain in Xiangxi, Shanhua County, that is, today's south of Fulong Mountain in Tongxi Village, Pingtang Town, Wangcheng County.
Zeng Guofan's tomb mound was cast with a mixture of glutinous rice, with three stele courses. The main stele is inscribed: "Tomb of the Imperial Qing Grand Tutor and Grand Secretary Zeng Wenzheng, First-Rank Marquis, and Lady Ouyang." The tomb enclosure is 5 meters in diameter and surrounded by granite. In front of the tomb is an ancient platform of 50 square meters. East and west of the platform, stone steps lead down beneath the stone watchtowers, along the Tongxi Temple wall, to the outer gate of Zeng Guofan's tomb lodge. Along the passage originally stood stone beasts and stone figures, of which only remnants remain today. Directly in front of the cemetery are two ancient ginkgo trees and two arhat pines, lush and flourishing. Nearby there is also a collapsed spirit-way stele, with text composed by Li Hongzhang and calligraphy by Huang Ziyuan, generally recounting Zeng Guofan's life and achievements, and especially precious.
