The site of the CPC Xiangxiang District Committee is at No. 1 Qingshuitang Road in Changsha City (formerly No. 22 Qingshuitang). This area was originally a suburban area with winding paths around two ponds of different shapes, upper and lower. The water from the upper pond flowed into the lower pond and became clear and bright after settling, hence the name Qingshuitang (Clear Water Pond). In the past, this place was relatively remote, with only a few simple farmhouses nearby, surrounded by vegetable plots, melon sheds, and small paths. After liberation, with the development of urban construction, it is now a bustling urban area. It faces Bayi Road in front, borders Qingshuitang Road on the right, is separated from Changsha No. 1 Middle School and other units by Zhanlanguan Road at the back, and has the Highway Administration Bureau and other units on the left. Buses No. 1, 3, 9, and 12 all reach the vicinity of Qingshuitang.
The former site of the CPC Xiang Area Committee in Qingshuitang faces south and is a small single-story brick-and-wood house with a building area of 118 square meters. It has six main rooms, including the hall, and two utility rooms at the back. The main house is laid out in a T shape: the entrance in the middle leads into the hall, behind which a partition wall separates the rear hall, and on each side of both the hall and the rear hall there is one living room. The entire house is enclosed by a wall.
This house at Qingshuitang was built by the merchant Tao Shuqing. After October 1921, Mao Zedong rented it under the public identity of a teacher at the First Normal School, using it as the secret office of the CPC Xiangxiang District Committee. To cover revolutionary activities, he moved his wife Yang Kaihui and her mother to live there, and kept two guest rooms for visiting comrades. In 1923, Mao Zedong was transferred to work in Shanghai. That summer, after the CPC Xiangxiang District Committee organ moved elsewhere, the house was still used by Tao Shuqing. In 1932, the house was sold to the new owner Liang Defen. In 1950, the provincial cultural relics management committee requisitioned the house. In 1956, this site was designated as a provincial key cultural relic protection unit. Since then, after multiple repairs and reinforcements, the central hall, Mao Zedong and his wife's living quarters, Yang Kaihui's mother's room, and guest rooms have been restored and displayed, and an auxiliary exhibition room has been opened.
In 1969, a series of new buildings were constructed near the original site. First, to the south of the site, large and small ponds and vegetable plots were symbolically restored; 100 meters to the left of the site, a memorial hall with an area of 3,528 square meters was built. The memorial hall has 8 exhibition rooms, displaying historical materials, photographs, and artifacts related to the revolutionary activities of the CPC Xiangxiang District Committee. Additionally, a square and a gate facing Bayi Road were built south of the pond. On the square, a full-body aluminum alloy statue of Mao Zedong donated by Heilongjiang Province was erected, with a pedestal 7.1 meters high and the statue itself 12.26 meters tall. Winding paths were built between the site and various buildings, and trees such as cedars, podocarpus, camphor, plane trees, magnolias, holly, sago palms, red-thorn, pomegranates, osmanthus, willows, palms, bamboo, and other varieties were planted on the open spaces. Various flowerbeds of different shapes were also created, planted with exotic flowers and plants. Thus, this memorial site has become a garden park covering over 38,000 square meters.
Currently, the exhibition of the historical traces of the CPC Xiangxiang District Committee is still housed in the original memorial hall. The exhibition content is divided into four parts: "Spreading Marxism," "Leading the Workers' Movement," "Leading the Anti-Imperialist and Anti-Feudal Struggle," and "Consolidating and Developing the Party Organization." The exhibition area is 188 square meters, divided into eight large panels. In addition, two group sculptures and some historical artifacts are displayed. Among the more precious artifacts are: the declaration issued by the Changsha mud and wood workers, representative certificates and picket certificates of the Changsha mud and wood workers' strike committee, miners' lamps and small kerosene lamps used by Anyuan workers, a copper gong used by the Yuebei Peasant Workers' Union, textbooks used in workers' night schools, and some publications from that time.
