Dawei Mountain National Forest Park is located in the northeast of Liuyang City, Hunan Province, 118 kilometers from the provincial capital Changsha. With dense forests, abundant resources, beautiful scenery, and a pleasant climate, it is called the "Green Pearl of Eastern Hunan." In 1992, it was approved by the Ministry of Forestry as a national forest park. Dawei Mountain National Forest Park covers more than 70,000 mu. The area is surrounded by mountains, with towering and upright peaks, fertile land, abundant rainfall, and rich and varied vegetation. Primary secondary forest and planted forest blend into one, forming a green ocean. There are 23 plant formations and more than 3,000 plant species, 17 species listed among the national first- and second-class protected tree species, more than 60 species of wild animals discovered, and 14 species of rare protected animals listed among the national first- and second-class protected species; more than 1,200 species of colorful butterflies breed in the forest, making it worthy of the title "Natural Museum of Animals and Plants."
Dawei Mountain National Forest Park is famous for its "beauty." Among the high mountains and dense forests are inlaid countless strange peaks and rocks and more than 100 flowing springs and flying waterfalls. The mountain becomes beautiful because of water, and the water is even more beautiful because of the forest. Here in spring, birds sing and flowers are fragrant, streams sing joyfully, and vitality fills the air. In midsummer, climbing the 1,515-meter Wuzi Stone Peak, the mountain is full of azaleas in brilliant purples and reds, a true marvel. In late autumn, red maples are fully dyed and set off against green pines and emerald bamboo, a riot of colors that enchants the viewer; if the autumn sky is clear and crisp, standing on the summit of Qixing Ridge at 1,607.9 meters and gazing into the distance, one sees vast mountains and layered ridges. Watching the sunrise in the morning and the sunset glow in the evening, the magnificent high-mountain scenery is all taken in, making one carefree and joyful and full of lofty sentiment. In winter, the whole mountain is covered with jade-like trees and crystal branches, wrapped in silver, truly a scene of northern-country splendor. Because of the geographical features of high mountains and dense forests, it forms a forest microclimate of "no severe heat in summer and no severe cold in winter," giving Dawei Mountain the advantages of a "natural air conditioner" and a "great oxygen bar." The average annual temperature here is 11.4 degrees, the annual relative humidity is above 85 percent, and the average summer temperature is 20 to 28 degrees. In particular, the air here is fresh and fragrant, and the water quality is excellent, able to satisfy people's desire for health, beauty, longevity, and returning to nature, making it a very ideal destination for leisure, vacation, tourism, and conferences.
Dawei Mountain was once the largest Buddhist holy site in eastern Hunan, with the ruins of large temples such as Yuquan Temple, Chen Immortal Temple, Qixing Temple, Baimian General Temple, and Honglian Temple. Through the ages, some eminent monks and literati came here because of its fame to travel and study. Older-generation proletarian revolutionaries such as Mao Zedong, Wang Shoudao, and Hu Yaobang left glorious footprints in the area of Biandan Pass and Taoshu Rock.
